The unit of practice is one small successful attempt, not one hour. Counting hours measures sitting, counting reps measures attempts. A teaching convention, stated as a convention.
The rep is the unit
Let's say you sat with the guitar for an hour on Sunday and called it practice. Count what actually happened: maybe four clean changes between chords.
The unit is the rep: one small successful attempt at the thing you can't quite do yet. Not an hour, not a session, not a streak. Four clean chord changes are four reps whether they take six minutes or sixty. Counting hours rewards sitting there; it doesn't reward attempting. This is a convention, and it's the one the whole book runs on.
A rep is one successful attempt. That's the unit.
Pick the thing you're learning and do exactly five reps today. Count them on your fingers. Stop at five.

Spacing beats cramming
Let's say you did all your Spanish on the Saturday before the trip and by Thursday it was gone. That's the schedule, not your memory.
Same total time, spread across days, beats it all in one block. Cepeda and colleagues pooled 317 experiments and the advantage held (Cepeda et al. 2006, PubMed 16719566). The heroic all-day session feels like commitment and stores less than six short ones.
Spread the same hour. Keep more of it.
Take the twenty minutes you had planned for one day this week and split it into four five-minute slots on four different days.
The testing effect: in Roediger and Karpicke 2006, students who took recall tests kept more after two days and one week than students who restudied the same number of times, even though restudying felt more confident. Roediger and Karpicke 2006, Psychological Science, PubMed 16507066.
Pull, don't reread
Let's say you reread the same chapter three times, closed the book, and couldn't say what it said.
Trying to pull the answer out of memory is itself the practice. Students who took recall tests kept more after two days and a week than students who restudied the same amount of time. The restudiers felt more confident anyway (Roediger and Karpicke 2006, PubMed 16507066). Familiarity with the page is what rereading trains, and it's not recall.
Close the book first. Then ask it questions.
Take one page of what you're learning, read it once, close it, and write down everything you remember. Then check. That's a rep.
The plateau: progress flattens while the skill keeps consolidating under the surface; flat stretches are normal parts of adaptation, not evidence of a ceiling. A teaching convention, stated as a convention.
The plateau is a step
Let's say week one flew, week two crawled, week three was flat, and you quit on the flat. The flat was load-bearing.
Progress comes in stairs: a rise, then a flat stretch where the new level consolidates, then another rise. The flat part isn't the skill refusing, it's the step being built under you. Reading the plateau as the ceiling is how week two claims most people, precisely because the plateau is scheduled to arrive then. That's a convention, but it matches every skill you've ever learned.
The plateau is a step. Stand on it.

The two-minute start is a named convention (from productivity practice, popularized by David Allen's two-minute rule and James Clear's two-minute habit version): shrink the entry to the rep until starting is trivial. Named as conventions, not science.
The two-minute door
Let's say you keep planning the proper session, an hour, quiet, ready, and it keeps not happening, and the planning itself is exhausting.
Shrink the door: two minutes of the actual thing, allowed to stop there. It's a named convention, not science: David Allen's two-minute rule for tasks, James Clear's two-minute version for habits. The mechanism is that starting is the expensive part, and a two-minute door gets you through it. Waiting for the right conditions for the full session is how week two ends with zero reps.
Make the door two minutes wide. You can always stay longer.
Commit to two minutes of your practice, once a day, for the next three days. Permission to stop at two.
